Pixel Shading Tutorial by kitted Pixel Shading Tutorial by kitted
As suggested by :iconerikakaiser:

This tutorial says Paint Shop Pro because that is the program I use, but this tutorial can be applied to any graphics program, be it MS Paint or Photoshop :)

This is how I do shading in pixel art. It's really simple when you get right down to it. :P

EDIT: Interested in dithering and further methods on how to accomplish it? Check out my new tutorial.

Hmmm. I gotta say, i had no idea what to do about pixel shading before =P. If this is simple shading, what are the harder techniques? :/

This is so helpful, a huge thanks to you for taking the time out of your schedule to make this. I had seen dithering used by other artists, yet couldn't quite figure out its exact purpose (and none of them really cared to explain the "checkerboard," either, leaving a non-pixel artist like me in a lot of dismay). And adding the smidget about the secondary light ('reflective') source was a reminder that "flat isn't always right," and it helps give pixels more "lifelike." I'm definitely going to be checking out your other tutorials!

Thanks again!

Tutorial is a better shading tutorial. I used it to make my icon, i think the blocky look of the shading makes it look more 3d.
